32 / BUILDING DIALOGUE / MARCH 2026 ELEMENTS Rural School Design Designing for Rural Resilience: The Evolving Role of Colorado’s Rural Schools A ccording to Colorado’s 2025 State Education Snapshot, 15% of the state’s K-12 students – about 135,000 students – attend ru- ral schools. Often overlooked, these schools play a vital role in their com- munities, serving as more than just centers for learning. From flexible education models to multifunctional facilities, rural schools are the heart of their communities. To effectively support the community, it is essential that each school's design reflects its specific needs and goals. Below are examples of unique considerations that may need to be incorporated into the design of rural schools. n Expanding educational opportunities for flexibility. Many metropolitan schools operate on a school choice model, allowing families to select a school rather than being assigned one based on location. This enables schools to be highly spe cialized, such as th e Mapleton Performing Arts School or Denver’ s STEM School. S uch specialized schools can provide unique design elements, like labs or performance stages. In contrast, rural communities don’t always have the option for multiple school choices, and their schools must incorporate varied pedagogies within one adapt- able building. When designing rural schools, flexibility and adaptability play a key role in keeping the school buildings relevant. Additionally, schools tend to have different focus areas based on local needs. For example, man y rural areas are experiencing a decline in population , leaving behind gaps in the workforce and a need to revitalize small commu- nities. Therefore , rural areas tend to rely o n the opportu- nities that come from career tech education. Incorporat- ing vocational education opportunities in a rural high school prepares students for a lifetime of self-sufficiency by modeling opportunities beyond academia’s traditional college-minded track. With vocational training, students have increased opportunities to graduate with career preparation that will revitalize the community’s econo- my. While many rural schools have traditional CTE pro- grams, the pedagogy has developed well beyond wood and metal skills. Career pathways improve with modern, safer and more flexible facilities. Weldon Valley School District’s outdated ag shop required students to walk out- side and lacked proper safety features. Partnering with Neenan Archistruction, Weldon Valley’s new ag shop fea- tures state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment that allow expanded programming and enhanced safety. For example, the design layout allows for both wood- working and steel welding spaces to coexist with physi- cal protections from a welding flame. Most notably, the new ventilation and specialty dust collection systems ensure the air quality exceeds code requirements. The equipment maintained the base program of woodwork- ing and metals in an efficient footprint while incorporat- ing safety features such as saw stoppers. The skylights added to the space provide natural light to support stu- dent focus. Our design provides the space needed for the CTE base program while allowing the school to supplement the courses. Through an efficient layout with flexible center space and direct access to an outdoor project area, Wel- don Valley now has the utility infrastructure to double the square footage and expand programming. This cre- ates opportunities to prepare students for a larger vari- ety of technical careers, including electrical, mechanical, animal and plant science. n Schools as community hubs. In small towns, schools often double as the community’s central gathering space. In Peetz – population 250 – the K-12 school building also functions as a communal dining hall, event center and recreation center.
